A new kind of quiet power

I used to think of algorithms as something I opened. I'd click into Spotify and its algorithm would wake up. I'd launch Netflix and the suggestions would shuffle. The algorithm lived in apps. It was polite in that way. It knocked before entering my life.

Today, the algorithm is no longer tied to the apps we use. It doesn't need us to open anything. It lives in the air, in the background, in the behavioral haze of everything digital. That includes everything about you the system infers without asking — your mood, your routines, your pauses, your avoidance patterns. That context becomes data. That data becomes inference. That inference becomes behavior.

And increasingly, it's not being collected for your benefit.

We're entering an era where platforms own not just your actions, but your potential actions — the things you could have done, but didn't. And the more that gets harvested, the more the algorithm stops being reactive and starts being prescriptive. Not just helping you live a life — but deciding which life is on offer.

Transparency is no longer enough

People have been demanding "transparent AI" for years. But transparency is starting to feel like the wrong goal.

Because in ambient systems, by the time you notice something is happening, it's already happened. The opacity isn't in the algorithm's structure. It's in its timing. It acts before you're aware there's a moment to question.

It's "what didn't I notice it changed"?

As algorithms slip beyond visible interfaces and into the ambient fabric of daily life, our responsibility is no longer about clicking responsibly — it's about demanding systems that reveal themselves, act with reciprocity, and give us back the context they take. The algorithm may not live in the app anymore, but it shouldn't live outside our awareness.
